Think the money for division marksmanship teams dried up after desert storm. AMU at Benning had the funds and brain trust to do 3 gun and make SDMRs for a few units.
Funding has always been an issue, but all of the branches of the DoD have maintained some form of team for many decades. The National Guard Marksmanship Training Unit hosts regular courses in addition to State-level organization. The Army Reserve Marksmanship Program has been directed by AR 140-1 since Maj. Gen. Will Sutton pushed to get it in there about a half century ago. I was actively involved in it from the late 1990s until recently. Of course, the AMU has always had the most funding.
Would love to be in an army where we got enough training and marksmanship instruction to make gun fighters and lead slingers out of combat arms. Need a two standard marksmanship program for combat arms and everyone else. The M7 rifle and it’s round will be in the inventory soon enough.
Going back to the late 80s and early 90s, we were also allowed to take the home and in POVs when we were in an on-call status. In my particular job, we were on-call a couple of days at a time. It wasn't uncommon to sign out a pistol for a week at a time.
