A custom rifle project by Paul Mazan:
In case you were wondering what insanity I've been up to since American Gunsmith print editions shutdown I wanted you to know that I finally broke down and made myself a Black Rifle. Well, sort of…
I've never liked the AR platform, which I suppose makes me a “fudd”. But, gee, all the kids on the block have black rifles, so I put my own idea of one together.
The rifle started as a left-handed Reminton 788.
The stock was my old competition stock from my Camp Perry days originally set up for a left-handed Winchester 70 chambered in 22-250.
I’ve also managed to stuff a left-handed Remington 788 into a left-handed Remington 700 stock in a different project. Anyway, I’ve included the pictures for your amusement. I can't wait to get it to our local range and see what it will do and what comments I get.

A couple of corrections. The 788 is in the REM 700 stock. The Dragon stock has a left handed Winchester model 70 in 22-250. The Dragon is inspired by the nose art from a WW II B-24 that flew missions in the Pacific. The tail ran around the fuselage all the way to the tail. On this one the tail wraps around the forend to the tip. The plane was named “The Dragon and his Tail”
Paul, what did you do to trigger on the 788? Enjoyed the articles in gunsmith.
